About Historic Environment Scotland and Scran

L’Incontro, a celebration of Italian heritage in Scotland, is an exhibition curated by the Italian department at the University of St Andrews, in collaboration with Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and Scran.

At the heart of our exhibition lies the mission of Historic Environment Scotland: to cherish, understand, share, and enjoy Scotland’s heritage with pride. With responsibility for over 300 properties of national importance, HES implements strategies like “Our Place in Time” to protect and conserve Scotland’s historic environment for future generations.

As a service of HES, Scran provides free access to a wealth of material culture and heritage resources. This digital archive allows users to explore the links between Scotland’s historic places, people, and events. Scran provides the opportunity to discover the rich tapestry of Scottish art, literature, language, and culture, aspects which shape our sense of place and cultural identity.

HES takes great pride and responsibility in their learning resources and inclusion initiatives, designed to allow a wider access for all. Whether through free learning visits or digital learning resources, HES aims to inspire lifelong connections to Scotland’s cultural legacy.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Scotland’s heritage, a treasure of stories, traditions, and memories. Through the collective efforts of HES and Scran, we ensure that Scotland’s rich cultural legacy continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the globe.
